Last updated: October 15, 2026

Common Terms being used

  1. “hardware wallet” — probably the most standard term when referring to a dedicated device.

  2. “cold wallet” or “cold storage wallet” or simply “cold wallet” — emphasises the offline-storage aspect.

  3. “cold storage” — often used generically, e.g., “I moved coins to cold storage”.

  4. “cold device” — less common but used by some users to mean hardware wallet (offline device).

  5. “cold-storage device” — similar to above, a device dedicated for offline.

  6. “USB wallet” — sometimes used (especially by novices) to mean a hardware wallet shaped like a USB stick.

  7. “trezor/ledger (etc) device” — users will refer to actual brands by device name (“I stored my BTC on my Ledger”).

  8. “air-gapped wallet” — a more technical variant referring to a wallet completely disconnected from the internet; sometimes used interchangeably with “cold wallet”.

  9. “self-custody hardware wallet” — more formal/enterprise phrasing, but showing up in user posts emphasising “keys I hold myself”.

  10. “off-line wallet” — less elegant phrasing, but used by some users for a “cold wallet”.
