L2/L2 Blockchain

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Frequently used terms

  • “L2” – Short for “Layer 2”; very commonly used in place of “Layer 2 blockchain” or “Layer 2 network”.

  • “L2 chain” / “L2 blockchain” / “L2 network”

  • “EVM L2” or “EVM L2” – Emphasises that the Layer 2 is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine environment.

  • “rollup” or “roll-up” – Because many L2s are rollups, users often say “which rollup are you on?” rather than explicitly “which L2”.

  • “optimistic rollup” and “zk-rollup” – These appear when users mention type of L2.

  • “EVM-compatible L2” – More descriptive phrasing, especially by more technical users.

  • “Ethereum L2” – Indicates a Layer 2 for Ethereum specifically (rather than a generic Layer 2 for some chain).

  • “sidechain” – Sometimes used interchangeably with L2 (though technically different), so shows up in user posts describing “Ethereum sidechains / L2s”.
