Overview

Summ has built a TurboTax-compatible PDF specifically for importing your crypto capital gains data. This guide walks you through how to download it from Summ and upload it directly into TurboTax.

You will need your Summ TurboTax PDF report (downloaded from the Reports page) and a TurboTax Online account.

Note: This guide covers the PDF upload flow only. If you are using TurboTax CD/DVD (Desktop), refer to the TurboTax TXF guide.

Step 1: Download your TurboTax PDF from Summ

Go to the Reports page in your Summ account. Confirm your report period and tax settings are correct, then download the TurboTax PDF Report.

Step 2: Navigate to Investments in TurboTax

Log in to TurboTax and go to Federal β†’ Wages & Income.

Find the Investments and Savings section and click Add/Edit next to Investments and Savings (this may show as Start if you haven't been here before).

You may land on a review screen showing previously imported investments. If so, click Add investments at the bottom to continue. If this is your first time here, TurboTax will take you straight through to the next step.

Step 3: Choose "Enter a different way"

When TurboTax asks you to choose a crypto service to import from, do not click Connect. Instead, select Enter a different way.

Step 4: Choose Upload

TurboTax will ask "How do you want to add your docs?" Select Upload (Files from this device), then click Continue.

Step 5: Upload your Summ TurboTax PDF

Drag and drop your Summ TurboTax PDF into the upload area, or click Drop docs here or browse to select it from your device.

Step 6: Wait for TurboTax to process your file

TurboTax will process your PDF and extract the data automatically. This may take a moment.

Step 7: Review your imported data

Once processing is complete, TurboTax will bring you back to the investments summary screen. You should see a Summ section showing your Digital Assets (Gain/Loss) total.

If your import shows a NEEDS REVIEW flag, click Review and continue through the steps below to resolve them.

If there are no flags and you are happy with your data, you can skip ahead to Step 11. If you would like to check your transactions first, click Review and continue through the steps below before proceeding.

Step 8: Double-check your sales

TurboTax will show a "Now, double-check your sales" screen with a prompt about Stablecoin transactions.

Note: If you had stablecoin transactions during the year, these are already included in your Summ report. You don't need to do anything extra here.

Click Continue to proceed.

Step 9: Fix the "Untitled" description issue

You may see a "Review your Summ sales" screen where all transactions show as Untitled with a NEEDS REVIEW status. This is a known TurboTax display bug and does not mean your data is incorrect.

To fix it, click the pencil (edit) icon on any transaction, then click Back without making any changes. TurboTax will reload the page and the correct descriptions will appear. Each transaction description should update to show the asset name and quantity, for example BERA (1.00000014).

Once the descriptions have updated, do a quick check to make sure the proceeds and cost basis figures look as expected before continuing.

After:

Step 10: Resolve any remaining "Needs Review" items

Once the descriptions have updated, check if any transactions still show NEEDS REVIEW. If none do, skip ahead to Step 11.

If some transactions are still flagged, this is because TurboTax expects a cost basis greater than zero for these transactions. You can enter the missing cost basis manually in TurboTax by clicking the pencil icon on each flagged transaction and following the prompts to fill in the purchase price and date.

Note: Summ is actively working on tools to help identify and resolve missing cost basis issues directly within the app. In the meantime if you are unsure how to resolve these, reach out to Summ support via the in-app chat.

Step 11: Complete the import

Once all transactions have been reviewed and no NEEDS REVIEW items remain, click Continue at the bottom of the page. TurboTax will bring you back to the investments summary screen showing your Digital Assets (Gain/Loss) with a final total gain or loss figure. Your crypto data is now successfully imported and you can continue with the rest of your return.

FAQ

Q: Why should I use the PDF upload instead of CSV?

The PDF upload is TurboTax's supported path for importing crypto tax data. Summ has built a PDF specifically formatted for this flow, and CSV uploads are no longer supported in TurboTax for this purpose.

Q: My description shows as "Untitled". Is my data wrong?

No. This is a known display issue within TurboTax and does not affect the accuracy of your imported data. You can click Edit then Back to see the correct description, or simply continue as your gains figures are unaffected.

Q: Does the TurboTax PDF include my crypto income (staking, airdrops, etc.)?

No. The TurboTax PDF only includes capital gains and losses. To report crypto income such as staking rewards or airdrops, you'll need to use your Summ Income Report and enter those figures manually in TurboTax under Less Common Income β†’ Miscellaneous Income. See our guide for instructions.

Q: Why won't my PDF upload?

Make sure you are uploading under the Federal section via the Investments and Savings flow, not the Documents section in the sidebar. These are different areas and uploading to Documents will not import your tax data correctly.
