Overview

If TurboTax's PDF upload doesn't work for your report (usually due to file size limits), this guide walks you through an alternative method: entering your capital gains data manually using Sales Section Totals from the TurboTax - Capital Gains Report (Alternate) in Summ.

Note: This is the alternative method. If you haven't tried the primary PDF upload flow yet, we recommend starting with US Guide: Importing Your Crypto Tax Report into TurboTax via PDF Upload first.

Step 1: Go to Investments

Log in to TurboTax and navigate to Income, then click Investments & Savings.

Click Add investments to get started.

Step 2: Choose Manual Entry

When TurboTax prompts you to choose a service to import from, click Enter a different way.

On the next screen, select Type it in myself.

Step 3: Select the Form

When asked which form to use, select 1099-DA.

For Digital asset service/filer, type Summ, then click Continue.

When asked "Did you get a 1099-DA from Summ?" — select Yes.

Important: You must select Yes here to continue, even if you did not actually receive a 1099-DA from Summ. This is required to unlock the next steps in TurboTax.

Step 4: Answer the Questions

TurboTax will ask a couple of quick questions:

Do you have more than three sales on your 1099-DA? → Select Yes

Did you buy every investment listed on your 1099-DA? → Select Yes (everything is already calculated for you by Summ)

Step 5: Enter Summary Totals

When asked how you'd like to enter your data, select Sales Section Totals.

You will not be entering every transaction individually. Sales Section Totals lets you enter just the summary figures from your Summ report.

Keep clicking Continue through the prompts until you reach the totals entry page.

Step 6: Use Your Summ Report to Enter the Totals

Open your TurboTax - Capital Gains Report (Alternate) from the Reports page in Summ. Enter a separate Sales Section Total for each of the following boxes, copying the proceeds and cost basis figures from your report:

Box I — Short-term (did not receive 1099-DA)

Box L — Long-term (did not receive 1099-DA)

Box H — Short-term (with basis not reported to the IRS)

Box K — Long-term (with basis not reported to the IRS)

Important: After entering the total for each box, click Add another sales total before moving on to the next one. Repeat until all four boxes have been entered.

Step 7: Review Your Entries

Double-check that all figures match the totals in your Summ report. Once everything looks correct, click Continue.

Step 8: Upload Your Full Capital Gains Report

TurboTax will now prompt you to attach a supporting document. Here's what to do:

1. Download your Capital Gains Report (PDF) from the Reports page in Summ.

2. If the file name is very long, shorten it before uploading.

3. Drag and drop the file into TurboTax, or click to browse and select it from your device.

4. Once complete, you will see an Upload successful confirmation.

5. Click Continue to save everything and proceed to the final confirmation screen.

Step 9: You're Done!

Your Form 8949 in TurboTax has been consolidated into those four summary rows, and the capital gains detail statement has been attached — TurboTax will send this to the IRS on your behalf.

You can now continue with the rest of your TurboTax filing.

FAQ

Q: When should I use this method instead of the PDF upload?

Use this method if the TurboTax PDF upload fails or doesn't import correctly — typically because your report is too large. This manual summary approach works regardless of report size.

Q: Why do I have to select "Yes" to receiving a 1099-DA if I didn't get one?

This is a TurboTax requirement to unlock the manual entry flow. It does not affect your tax filing — it simply allows you to proceed.

Q: Does this method include my crypto income (staking, airdrops, etc.)?

No. This report covers capital gains and losses only. To report crypto income, you'll need to use your Summ Income Report and enter those figures separately in TurboTax under Less Common Income → Miscellaneous Income.
