Archiving an Account: What It Does and How to Do It

How to Archive (and Unarchive) an Account

Written by Vivi Turla

What happens when you archive an account?

Archiving is a way to tidy up your Accounts page without losing any of your data. If you have a wallet, exchange or imported source you no longer actively use, but you still want its history to stay in your Summ account, archiving is usually what you're after.

Here's exactly what happens when you archive an account, and how to do it.

What archiving does

When you archive an account:

  • Your historical transactions are not deleted. Everything stays in your account.

  • Your tax calculations still include it. Transactions from the archived account continue to count towards your reports and balances.

  • It's excluded from future syncs. The account is skipped when you use "Sync all" on the Accounts page, so it won't pull in new transactions until you unarchive it.

  • It moves out of your main list. The account drops into the collapsed "Archived accounts" section at the bottom of the Accounts page, still showing its transaction count, assets and balance.

You can unarchive an account at any time.

Archive vs Delete

It's easy to mix these two up, so here's the difference:

  • Archive keeps all your data and keeps it counting in your report. It just stops syncing and hides the account from your main list. This can always be undone.

  • Delete removes the account and its data from your account entirely. This one will change your report, so use it with care.

How to archive an account

  1. Go to the Accounts page.

  2. Click on the account you want to archive to open its page.

  3. On that account's page, click the three-dots menu (⋮) in the top right, next to the sync button.

  4. Select Archive account.

  5. A confirmation window will appear explaining what archiving does. Click Archive account to confirm.

Once done, you'll see a short confirmation, and the account will move to the "Archived accounts" section at the bottom of your Accounts page. (If you archived it by mistake, you can click Undo on that confirmation straight away.)

How to unarchive an account

  1. On the Accounts page, scroll to the bottom and click Archived accounts to expand the section.

  2. Click the three-dots menu (⋮) next to the account you want to bring back.

  3. Select Unarchive.

The account will return to your main list and start syncing again. From this same menu, you can also choose Delete account if you'd rather remove it for good.

A couple of things to keep in mind

Empty sources can archive themselves. If a source has no transactions on it, it may be archived automatically. (This doesn't apply to CSV sources.)

Multi-chain wallets need every chain archived. If a wallet is tracked across several blockchains, it will only show as archived once each individual chain has been archived. If even one chain is still active, the wallet stays in your main list.
